Human Growth and Development across the lifespan
This content area focuses on the various psychological and psychological changes that an individual experiences over the course of their lifetime.
My CFS 3055 course focused on a child's development from conception to age 8. I learned about many teratogens, such as viruses, drugs, alcohol, chemicals, and malnutrition, and how they can influence the proper development of an embryo. I also learned about Piaget's Four Stages of Cognitive Development:
- Sensorimotor (Birth to 18-24 months)
- Preoperational (18-24 months to age 7).
- Concrete operational (Ages 7-12)
- Formal operational (Adolescence- adulthood)

In CFS 4051, I learned about development from adolescence through emerging adulthood. This class focused on the stage of Identity vs. Role Confusion, Erikson's fifth stage of Psychosocial Development. During this stage, an adolescent's primary task is to answer the question, "Who am I?" Through role experimentation, adolescents are on a mission to discover a sense of self and to become comfortable in their own skin.
PSYC 4072 (Adult Development and Aging) focused on Erikson's latest stages, Generativity vs. Stagnation and Integrity vs. Despair. I learned about the physical and psychological struggles that accompany aging as well as the positive aspects of growing older.
